Torchlight Cloud Experimentation
{ July 29th, 2009 }
Hello everyone. I was looking up some web applications. Most of the stuff I was looking at was of course open source, php-based software. I am looking at invoicing, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Human Resource Management (HRM), and so on. Not to mention this wonderful site and the new sites we are going to be launching in the next few months.
We used to have a server in our office but then I decided to get rid of that and move to hosting from Google Apps and GoDaddy. We time progressed and now we have outgrown GoDaddy. This means we need to get a new server. Of course, why would I want to spend money to host a physical server either at a managed hosting facility, in a co-locaiton center, or in-house. Well the I decided, let’s go ahead and try out these elastic servers that I keep hearing about. After all, it’s about time that I “plug into the cloud”.
I have the choice between a few host companies. Arguably, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the major cloud with Elastic Server functionality but then I decided to look locally. We have a standing relationship with Rackspace Fanatically Hosting, and I remember them mentioning Mosso. Well Mosso went through a name change and is the RackSpace Cloud. We just signed up for Rackspace Cloud and we will allow you to track our progress in this blog with our big Cloud Experimentation!
